Give your new hires the tools they need to excel with our transformative "Workforce Development Voucher - Any Cohort" course. This 11-week online, instructor-led program is designed to equip employees with no prior background in building automation with the skills they need to become field-ready service or construction technicians.

Structured to allow maximum efficiency, this course enables your employees to be 80% utilized by week 4 of the program. It covers the A-Z of building automation systems, teaching them how to deploy, configure, and troubleshoot these systems from scratch.

Course Breakdown:

Week 1 – Introduction to BAS Field Work

  • Safety protocols and jobsite conduct

  • Electrical fundamentals: voltage, current, resistance

  • Reading wiring diagrams and BAS schematics

  • Use of tools: multimeters, wire strippers, drills

  • Intro to HVAC control systems (VAVs, RTUs, chillers)

Week 2 – IT and Controls Integration

  • IP vs MS/TP network fundamentals

  • BACnet, Modbus, and LonTalk protocol principles

  • Layered BAS architecture (field level, automation level, management level)

  • Device addressing, IP planning, subnetting

  • Setup of a virtual BAS network for simulation exercises

Week 3 – Variable Air Volume (VAV) and Fan Coil Unit (FCU) Systems

  • Sequence of operations for VAVs and FCUs

  • Controller selection and installation

  • Sensor wiring, damper actuator mounting

  • Lab exercises: simulate air volume control with sensors and feedback

Week 4 – Rooftop Units (RTUs) and System Architecture

  • RTU components: compressors, economizers, fans

  • Mixed air damper control, discharge air reset

  • Hands-on: wiring and programming a mock RTU

  • Introduction to supervisory BAS platforms

Week 5 – Mixed Air Handling Units & Interface Design

  • Design of user-facing graphics

  • Control logic for mixed air systems and economizers

  • Alarm and trend setup basics

  • Lab: build a dashboard in a simulated BAS front-end

Week 6 – Pump Control and Troubleshooting Fundamentals

  • On/off and variable speed pump control

  • PID loop tuning for flow and pressure

  • Use of simulation tools to inject faults and troubleshoot

  • Lab: simulate wiring and configuring differential pressure sensors

Week 7 – Hydronic Heating System Control

  • Boilers, mixing valves, and supply/return temperature control

  • Sensor mapping and safety interlocks

  • Hands-on: full hot water system simulation with override testing

Week 8 – Chilled Water Systems and Programming Introduction

  • Overview of chillers, cooling towers, and chilled beams

  • Sensor calibration, setpoint tuning

  • Intro to block-based and line programming

  • Lab: write simple sequences for chilled water loop control

Week 9 – Networking, Cybersecurity, and Advanced Programming

  • Switch setup, VLANs, DHCP/static IP planning

  • Cybersecurity practices: firewall rules, remote access policy

  • Advanced program logic: sequencing, interlocks, resets

  • Troubleshooting exercises with simulated cyber “breaches”

Week 10 – Checkout, Commissioning & Handoff

  • Documentation best practices: as-builts, redlines

  • Commissioning checklists, function tests

  • Role-playing end-user training

  • Team-based checkout of full mock system

Week 11 – Practicum

    • Final project that simulates a full BAS deployment:

      • Install devices

      • Configure and program control logic

      • Commission and test

      • Present to “client” (instructor/peer review)

    • Includes performance evaluation and feedback session

Upon course completion, your employees will not only be able to install and manage complex building automation systems, but they will also have the ability to troubleshoot and resolve system issues swiftly and effectively.
